TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORTS IN SRI LANKA

TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORTS – SRI LANKA

The terrible loss of life and property suffered by the people of southeastern Asia and India represents the most cataclysmic natural disaster of our lifetime. Over 150,000 people have died, 1.8 million people are in immediate need of food aid and an estimated five million have been left homeless.

Hope Force International’s relief efforts are currently centered in one of the hardest hit countries, Sri Lanka, and assessments are currently underway with partner agencies in Thailand and Indonesia. In Sri Lanka, the country with the second highest death toll, officials are estimating the total at 30,000, with thousands still missing. There are serious concerns that even more will die from resulting diseases caused by a lack of sanitation and clean water.

Hope Force is collaborating with one of our partner agencies, Humedica, a Christian-based international relief organization with over a 20-year history. The director in Sri Lanka, Pastor Sam Rajasuriar, continues to oversee all relief activities. Hope Force is planning to provide medical teams in conjunction with additional partner agencies. One of the longer-term recovery projects will be assisting the many fishing communities in the Point Pedro division of N. Sri Lanka. Here, people are suffering not only from the loss of their loved ones, but have also lost the basis to generate their income -- their boats and fishing nets. We would like to provide new boats and nets, which is an opportunity to tangibly convey God’s love -- bringing hope through compassionate action. Additionally, many homes were completely destroyed. Therefore, we will join our partners in an effort to restore this terrible loss.

HFI’s project consists of the following components:
• Homes that cost approx. 150,000 Rupees each (approx. US$1,600).
• A boat with motor and equipment costs about 600,000 - 800,000 Rupees (approx. US$5,600-$7,500)
• Fishing nets 1,800 Rupees (approx. $17 each).

Each boat provides a livelihood for up to four families.
