The Gulf Still Needs Our Help...

As I stood in line with the Hope Force team waiting for my Subway sandwich, the gentleman behind me asked, "What are you all doing here?" I explained about the housing reconstruction going on in Biloxi. His response startled me. . ."So you mean they still need help?"

Even though it has been over a year since Katrina, first impressions can be deceiving. Piles of trash, broken windows, rotted beams and twisted metal do not cover the landscape anymore. Fresh coats of paint cover many houses. New roofs keep out the rain. Fresh lumber beams hold up porch awnings. Yet, behind the front doors stand open framing, bare kitchens and holes in the walls for future plumbing. FEMA trailers dot the landscape as residents begin a second year of displacement. Yards remain flowerless, due to soil yet contaminated. The media rarely mentions Mississippi and the dramatic needs of her people anymore.

Now, more than ever, victims of Katrina need an infusion of hope. It is a privilege to be involved in the partnership of many relief organizations in Biloxi, all working to support each other, without concern for great recognition. The Salvation Army purchased an old football stadium days before Katrina hit, which has proven to be an amazing asset in the relief efforts. Numerous groups have aided in constructing dorm rooms, a full service kitchen and dining area, plumbing hook ups for trailers and a lounge for weary workers. During our recent stay, we enjoyed lunch with workers from many states and relief groups, all with common hearts to make a difference in the community.

For Hope Force, our service in Biloxi has given opportunity to faciliate teams, partner with other agencies, and support the local governmental officials. Chronic need demands sacrificial teamwork. We're grateful for God's preparation for future opportunities to serve.
