Reaching Haiti's Refugees

Haiti: Hope Force Responds

Read our Haiti response press release.

January 23, 2010: A Hope Force medical team is working in the town of Jimani, which is the border town just inside the Dominican Republic. This camp now has at least 2,000 Haitian refugees, as tens of thousands of people flee the environs of Port-au-Prince. Numerous aftershocks following the initial magnitude 7 quake continue to shake buildings, causing additional damage and loss of life. Our team is manning the night shift of the field hospital that has been created there to do triage, operations, and patient care.
Hope Force President/CEO Jack Minton reports “As we came into Port au Prince, there was a noticeable increase in the sights, smells and sounds associated with catastrophe. Here in Haiti, the world has witnessed a disaster that has not only impacted those who experienced the horror of the earthquake, but all of us who have watched the live footage beamed into our living rooms. Because of the quagmire in getting supplies into Haiti, people are losing limbs that could have been saved.

A Hatian baby born in the aftermath of the earthquakeSeeing a precious baby girl, born in the same hospital where our team is dealing with tragic suffering and life-changing injury, was more than joy.... it was hope bundled in the miracle of new life. The gift of life was never more poignant.”

Urgent needs: Hope Force personnel are participating in the daily UN disaster response coordination meetings. The need to purchase and send tents that can serve as patient recovery and volunteer housing is predominant. This urgent need is being felt by most every relief agency working amongst the devastation.

In partnership with World Relief, Hope Force is working in collaboration with two Christian Hospitals in Haiti to serve the tens of thousands of people impacted by the earthquake. These projects involve the development of durable tent facilities, each located on existing Hospital property, for Patient Recovery and Volunteer Housing. We have identified a company which will fabricate, ship and assemble the structures on the hospital grounds. A preliminary list of items and funds has been identified to support these two projects.

We invite you to consider giving toward these needs or recruiting your church, service agency or company to fully sponsor one or more of these urgently needed items:
  • Four Durable Tent Structures – 60 feet x 120 feet
    • [$30,000 each | Donate Now]
    • 7,200 square feet of usable space for volunteer housing and patient recovery
  • Shipping Expenses for Equipment & Supplies
