Rebuilding Sri Lanka

Boat Handing Over
Boat Handing Over
Very early on, Hope Force International determined that we should focus our attention upon the economic recovery needs of the effected fishing families, and we set out to secure funding for this purpose. On June 5th, near Point Pedro, our team had the great privilege and pleasure of participating in the handing over ceremony of 17 boats, motors, and nets to those whose whole livelihood was taken from them by the tsunami. (This will provide employment for 51 families.)

Like you, our heart breaks as we consider the terrible loss of life and property suffered by the people of south eastern Asia and India. Please join us in prayer for the recovery efforts now underway, and for a spirit of generosity and compassion from the world community, and the Body of Christ, in particular.

Crushed bones didn't get the attention in the tsunami aftermath that devastated homes and missing people did, but along with infrastructure rebuilding, surgeons are now rebuilding human beings. To aid in that effort, a group of orthopedic surgeons nationwide, including Dr. Tony Russell with the Campbell Clinic, are partnering with Memphis-based Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics and the Brentwood-based Christian aid organization Hope Force International to bring trauma equipment and implants to two cities in Sri Lanka.

First and foremost, let me thank you for your prayers and support for this outreach to Sri Lanka. Your prayers were the air under our wings, keeping us safe, healthy, and lifted up. Thank You! Hope Force's outreach to Sri Lanka was great and hard, fun and awful, all rolled up in one. There were heartbreaking stories - too numerous to count -- from both the Tsunami and the Civil War. The hospital wards were full to overflowing with men, women, and children with serious (and many times) multiple fractures. All were waiting in hope for their "turn" as the medical system is strained to the breaking point. There are less than 30 Orthopaedic Surgeons care for the near 20 million people!

The terrible loss of life and property suffered by the people of south-eastern Asia and India represents the most cataclysmic natural disaster of our lifetime. Over 150,000 people have died, 1.8 million people are in immediate need of food aid and an estimated five million have been left homeless.
