![]() “All of our everything has been shared with everybody.” The courageous Director of the Mission Hospital in Port-au-Prince gazed at the TV camera on the nightly news to tell the world about his plight. The powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti Tuesday afternoon spared his medical facility but now it was filled with injured men, women and children. All medications, food and water were gone. “All we can do is wait for the Cavalry.”At Hope Force, we believe that followers of Christ have a mandate to respond to the plight of those suffering from disaster or chronic need. The devastation in Haiti has been overwhelming, and the suffering beyond comprehension. The full scale of the death toll and destruction is still yet to be determined, but is undoubtedly on a scale unlike anything this impoverished nation has endured in recent history.
Hope Force International is in the early stages of making contact with potential partners on the ground in an effort to formulate an appropriate and effective response. Your prayers for God's direction and provision are essential. We are sending key personnel to this impoverished nation to assess the most expedient and effective means of utilizing available resources for rapid response. Many of our ministry partners watch the evening news and feel compassion and mercy for those suffering from this tragedy. They are asking how they can respond. Right now, our primary need is for funding to carry out our assessment on the ground in the coming days. Following that, personnel, equipment and supplies will be shipped to Haiti as part of our coordinated relief efforts with Partners in the country. If you would like to contribute to these efforts, please click here.
We have established ongoing communication links with various partners in Haiti as well as domestic groups desiring to engage the situation. Having worked in Haiti previously and already having partner agencies on the ground is a big step forward in our efforts. Our 700 trained volunteers have been informed of our activities as we prepare for an appropriate response. The level of need is acute and the chaos in Port-au-Prince is overwhelming but we are confident that our efforts will play a key role in responding to the tragedy. Smith & Nephew, a leading orthopedic manufacturer in Memphis, is prepared to send supplies through Hope Force. In addition, HFI will recruit and mobilize qualified surgeons. World Relief, Cure International, the Firm Foundation, Youth With A Mission and several large congregations across the country are in direct communication with HFI to map out a collaborative response effort.
The mission of Hope Force is to equip willing responders and mobilize them onto pathways of service. Thanks to the fact that we have trained nearly 1,000 volunteers, in advance, they are prepared and allowed to respond, often in restricted areas, when disasters strike such as we are seeing in Haiti today.
