Hope Force Responds to California Wildfires
On Thursday, November 13th, Hope Force Reservists participated in the nation’s largest state sponsored emergency exercise under the direction of the governor’s Office of Homeland Security in California. Reservists in Orange County helped staff sheltering operations in a simulated response to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake.
On Saturday, November 15th, wildfires broke out in Sylmar and Orange County. By that evening, Hope Force Reservists in southern California were put on standby status. Sunday morning, Hope Force received a formal request to help staff the Local Assistance Center in Anaheim. This center serves as a one-stop shop, providing a single location at which individuals, families, and businesses can access available disaster assistance programs and services.
Beginning today, those devastated by the fires will find Hope Force Reservists offering tangible resources, such as gas and phone cards, as well as emotional and spiritual care (by trained Reservists). Due to the scope of the disaster, assistance needs will likely continue for a number of weeks.

Maryann Mildenberger (Hope Force Reservist) Shares Her Deployment Experience
Serving here with Hope Force International in Chauvin and Montegut, Louisiana, after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike both hit in a three-week span, has been an amazing privilege. The people here are precious and caring and are definitely looking out and helping each other as best they can. We have met so many wonderful friends, and have been "adopted" a number of times….
Hope Force International volunteers, teamed up with other organizations, are out every day -- gutting wet, molding walls, tarping roofs and cleaning up smelly, sticky muck from flooded houses as well as attending to whatever emotional and spiritual care needs that come up. Neighbors are giving us referrals to help other neighbors, and everyone is doing their best to help their community recover. Seeing the damage and so many shattered dreams -- yet people responding in faith and with courage -- has been an awesome experience.
