SPS New England CEO, Wayne Capolupo
SPS New England

Biloxi, MS

January 24 – Feb 3, 2007
Two trailers of tools, 1500 miles of highway, 40 individuals traveling by plane. Company CEO, surveyors, civil engineers, controller, safety officer, supervisors, skilled bridge builders and friends. From Massachusetts to Mississippi, they traveled and arrived with eager hearts and willing hands. SPS New England, a multi-million dollar road and bridge building company headquartered in Salisbury, Massachusetts, had already served residents of Biloxi, Mississippi --devastated by Hurricane Katrina with a team of 20 -- in January, 2006. Members of the team returned home full of so much vision and excitement, that the company CEO encouraged a return trip in January, 2007. This year, 40 participants joined the adventure by raising $800 each, taking vacation time and leaving their families to further aid East Biloxi in rebuilding their community -- one house at a time. Co-workers left behind in Massachusetts donated vacation days to those on the team. In one week's time, the lives of Karen Parker, Sadie Allen, B.V. Sanders and Edwin Alley were forever changed. The SPS team exemplified the company core values of quality workmanship, dependability and hard work. They transformed Karen Parker's dirt lot, carving out and pouring an intricate foundation and framing a new home on an 8 foot platform. Sadie's home changed from bare studs, to a home ready for sheet rock and flooring. BV Sanders no longer worries about water pouring through her roof onto her bed. Edwin Alley, now in his 80's, grinned -- knowing he would soon be back home, with bright red doors and shutters to greet him. Wayne Capolupo, Chairman and CEO of SPS New England, Inc., summed up the time in Biloxi with these words: "I came here hoping that I would be able to make a difference, even though it's a huge challenge that you've taken on here. We know that we can't solve all the problems. . .and yet, I feel as though we did something. I had a lot of fun too! …It really was, without question, the best team-building event or effort I have ever been involved in – and we do a lot of employee related events and nothing even compares to this. The level of enthusiasm, the level of camaraderie that it engendered among all the employees… we feel like a cohesive family unit, rather that just co-workers."
