A Compelling Need

The country of Sudan is besieged with both man-made and natural disaster. The United Nations has classified this as a “Complex Disaster” – involving the countries’ government, local tribes and outside economic forces. The simplest description of what has taken place over the past 20 years is a fight for control of resources.

More specifically, there is a large reserve of oil in the central region of Sudan which has caused a civil war between tribes, villages and the government. Sudan also has experienced severe drought and famine over these past several years. Sadly, this fight for control has brought on some of the most sadistic type of ethnic cleansing the world has seen.

In addition to the struggle for resources, tensions have arisen between the Christians (primarily in the south) and the Muslims (primarily in the north).UN experts are saying that two million people have died over the past ten years, due to the brutal tactics of this fighting. Much of this violence has taken place in the central and northern section of the country. To escape this hostility, women and children (and many orphans) have traveled to the southern part of Sudan when there appears to be relative safety and stability. Unfortunately this migration of internally displaced peoples (IDP’s) is placing a huge demand on the resources in the southern territory. Food, water, shelter, and other necessities are scarce.

Hope Force International has been invited to help with the “start-up” of a new orphan care village in the southern part of Sudan. This village will provide medical, educational and spiritual services. Initially, a small medical team will go to serve these victims and explore the possibility of continued assistance to the women, children and orphans of Sudan.
